Water lines and sewer force mains follow a curve, so they are installed by directional drill: HDPE fused into one string or restrained-joint PVC pulled back through the reamed bore. Gravity sewer and most storm drains must hold a slope, so they go in straight and on grade inside a steel casing by auger boring, or by directional drill only where the engineer has checked the profile.
