Straight, cased, on grade

A pit beside the road to the depth of the finished pipe; a track leveled in the bottom and aimed at a target across the way; a boring machine with a steel casing in front, a cutting head at the tip and an auger inside. The machine turns the auger and jacks the casing forward at once: the head cuts, the auger carries the spoil back, the casing follows into the hole it just made. A welder adds the next length until the head reaches the receiving pit; the carrier pipe goes in on spacers and the ends are sealed.

Orange County crossings that call for it

I-4 and the state routes through FDOT, the 408, 417, 429 and 528 through CFX, the SunRail and CSX corridor through the railroads, and gravity sewer and storm extensions between manholes under any street. Each wants a casing at a set elevation and inspects it.

Sand and water in the pit

A sand face wants to run, so the operator keeps the head slightly inside the casing and the push steady; the pit is shored and dewatered with well points or pumps sized for the ground. Where limestone is shallow the cutting head changes, not the method.

Other drilling and boring services in Orange County

Directional Drilling Orange County

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD): a steered bore between two small pits that puts conduit, pipe and cable under roads, driveways, parking lots and landscaping with no open trench.

Horizontal Drilling Orange County

Horizontal drilling for any line that has to cross something it cannot cut through: a street, a slab, a canal, a stand of trees. Entry pit, exit pit, nothing opened in between.

Directional Boring Orange County

Directional boring is the small-rig end of HDD: short, shallow bores for service lines, sleeves and conduit on residential and light-commercial lots.

Underground Drilling Orange County

Underground drilling for new utilities where the surface is spoken for: tracked, steered bores placed under whatever is already built on top.

Fiber Optic Cable Drilling Orange County

Fiber duct and drop conduit installed by directional drill for carriers, co-ops, campuses and developments: long shots along the right-of-way, short shots to the building.

Electrical Conduit Drilling Orange County

PVC and HDPE electrical conduit bored under pavement for primary feeds, secondary services, site lighting and EV charging circuits.

Underground Conduit Drilling Orange County

Single ducts and multi-duct bundles pulled through one reamed bore: communications, power, controls and spares placed together under the obstacle.

Structured Cable Drilling Orange County

Conduit between buildings for structured cabling, campus networks, security and controls, bored under courtyards, drives and parking rather than cut across them.

Utility Drilling Orange County

Utility drilling for water, sewer, gas, power and telecom owners: permitted road crossings, mains under live streets, services to the meter.

Communications Drilling Orange County

Communications conduit and cable placed by directional drill: telecom, cable TV, cell-site backhaul and private networks, under roads and lots.

Missile Boring Orange County

Missile boring (pneumatic piercing) drives a steel mole through the soil for short, straight, shallow runs under a driveway or sidewalk: the quickest way to sleeve a lawn or a walk.

Sewer, Water and Drain Lines Orange County

New water services and mains, sewer force mains and laterals, and storm drains installed under roads, driveways and yards without trenching them open.

Questions about auger boring and drilling in Orange County

Casing sizes?+

12-inch to 36-inch on the standard machines, larger with heavier equipment and deeper pits.

Push length?+

60 to 200 feet in one push covers most crossings; longer calls for two pits and a mid-crossing structure.

Why not directional for a sewer?+

A steered bore follows an arc; a gravity sewer needs the exact slope a cased auger bore provides.

Water in the pit?+

Shoring and dewatering are planned into every Orange County crossing.

Free estimate?+

Length of the run, what is being installed (conduit, duct, water, sewer, gas), what it has to cross, and where the plans stand. A crew that bores for a living can usually price it from that and a site walk.
